Apple Removes Accessories from iphone Packaging in Latest Effort to Reduce Footprint

Chhooooo Choooo…Apple is coming through! Apple is the latest big tech company to hop on the green environmental train. A few days ago, the company announced that their new iphone 12 will not ship with accessories that are usually included. Apple announced that the wall charger and lightening earpods will not be included in any future iphone releases. The move is supposedly an attempt by the company to lessen their environmental impact, who estimates that 2 million metric tons of carbon emissions will be cut as a result. According to Apple, there are 700 million lightening headphones and 200 billion power adapters already owned by individuals.
Apple fan girls and boys are not buying it and some have expressed outrage about this decision. Is this move by Apple truly a move to protect the environment or is it simply to widen their profit margins?! Apple should probably keep their focus on what they can do as a company to reduce their operational footprint rather than take away from their customers who are paying the high cost to own the phones they produce. With such prices, they expect accessories to be included.

It would be more green of apple to maybe invent solar powered iphones or something of the sort rather than remove necessary accessories from packaging. These accessories still have to be produced as the devices do not work without them. Customers will still have to buy them when they break or become damaged. two million metric tonnes is estimated to be cut but what about the other multi millions of tonnes that must be used to produce these accessories? When one thinks of the big picture, removing accessories from packaging will not make a major dent in their current carbon footprint especially considering that they will still be produced and sold separately.
Even so, Apple realizes the impact that manufacturing and operations has had on the environment since the year it was established by Steve Jobs. In 2016, Apple created their recycling program, which allows users to trade in their old phones for new devices. Apple recently became serious about sustainability in 2018 when it was announced that they would invest in negative emissions techniques. Last month, Apple expressed they were investing in the construction of wind turbines near the Danish town of Esbjerg. The clean energy attained from the wind turbines will power their data center in Viborg.
Towards the latter end of 2019, Apple released their environmental responsibility report, which calculated the company’s current footprint: A whopping 25 million metric tonnes!!! As shocking as this number may be, Apple is hoping to lessen their carbon footprint extensively and has made it a goal to make all products in factories that use 100% renewable energy sources by the year 2030.
Currently, all of Apple’s stores, data centers and offices are powered with renewable electricity and operations are now carbon neutral.
