Impossible Steak Review! How does it Compare to Beyond Steak?
Impossible released a new vegan meat product. If you are not a frequent shopper at Whole Foods then you may not have known about its release. This was a quiet drop as I didn’t even receive any marketing emails from Impossible about it. Impossible Meat is my number 1 brand for alt meat because the products substitute so well for the real deal. I always thought that Impossible would create a vegan bacon product before doing a steak because its needed. Beyond Meat also has the vegan steak game on LOCK! Beyond Steak is the steak lover turned vegetarian’s dream. There is no other brand that has outdone Beyond Meat’s vegan steak and it is my hope that they will create a full size steak option in addition to their seared tips.
The Assessment
Now that I’ve boasted about the #1 vegan steak, I’m sure you’re sitting on the edge of your seat and wondering what vegan meat taste tester Mechelle has to say about Impossible Meat. I wanted to love this new product so bad but lying is not my forte and I know that I ultimately need to break it to you and the rest of the world in the most honest but kindest way possible because I prefer not to be negative about my favorite alt meat brand but the truth is that I am not a fan of Impossible steak. This is probably thee only Impossible Meat product that I don’t like. Impossible, you guys dropped the ball on this one. It was not what I expected from one of the reigning brands of vegan and alt meat products.
Impossible Steak platedI made Impossible steak bites the usual way that I cook steak cuts (with onions and peppers). I baked some potato wedges and mac n cheese balls to go along with it. The texture of Impossible steak bites was a bit too spongy for my liking and the flavor was off. It does not taste like steak but of course that’s my opinion as someone who was a heavy steak eater so I feel that I know what the steak lovers would be looking for in a vegan steak. Something is lacking from Impossible steak and I just can’t put my finger on it.
Ingredients
Impossible steak main ingredient is soy protein isolate. Other ingredients include tapioca starch, sodium alginate, sunflower oil, calcium carbonate, dextrose, glucono delta lactone, apple juice powder, garlic powder, onion powder, yeast extract, soy leghemoglobin, salt, B vitamins, Vitamin E, zinc, L-trytptophan ,natural flavors and water
Let’s compare that with the ingredients in Beyond Steak: Water, wheat gluten, faba bean protein, canola oil, salt, natural flavor, garlic powder, onion powder, pomegranate concentrate, lecithin, fruit and vegetable coloring
While it is wonderful that Impossible steak is gluten free, the lack of wheat gluten could be the reason for its spongy like texture. The texture needs some firming up. I cooked the steak bites in a pan and didn’t opt to make them in the air fryer but I do wonder if that would have made the texture more tolerable.
But it Can’t be That Bad
Let’s talk about some positive aspects of Impossible’s new Steak bites. The steak bites contain 21 g of protein and zero cholesterol. The bites contain 80% less saturated fat than animal steak and it is fortified with vitamins, minerals and also is extremely environmentally friendly. The manufacturing process for Impossible Steak uses 94% less land, 94% less water and 93% less greenhouse gas emissions compared to animal sirloin steak. The steak bites are 100% gluten free.
All that I can say is that Beyond Meat’s steak has got a hold on me and I’m mighty glad about it. I love the thinner cuts of the tips. I even spied two new flavors of Beyond steak at Whole Foods over the weekend. And you can bet your bottom dollar that I will be trying them!
