The Princess of Wales brings Awareness to Holistic Healthcare Upon Completion of Three Peaks Challenge

Image
The Princess of Wales completed the Three Peaks challenge over the weekend.  The challenge involves a blend of driving and trekking through three of the highest mountain peaks in England, Scotland and Wales--Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Yr Wyddfa. The challenge areas cover 23 miles of walking distance along with a 462 mile drive between each peak.   The challenge is open to the public and many aim to walk to the summit of the peaks within 24 hours.  However, the trek is so grueling and extensive that only 40% of the individuals attempting the challenge are able to complete it within this timeframe.  It is recommended that individuals desiring to complete the Three Peaks Challenge engage in strength training over a period of eight to twelve weeks. Whether Catherine engaged in strength training is unknown but she has always been quite athletic.  Not only did Catherine complete the challenge--she is part of the smaller percentage of people who were able to comp...

Book Review: Reach for the Skai by Skai Jackson

All adult “big kids at heart" will certainly know who Skai Jackson is. Yes, I admit to being a past twenty something year old who would often indulge in shows like Disney’s ‘Jessie!' When I first began watching Jessie, (which was my younger sibling's favorite television show), I would always think to myself—who’s that cute little brown girl with the ever perfect head of beautiful natural kinky hair?! I had never seen a young black child actress like her who embraced their natural hair the way that she did! In her book, Skai outlined in great detail who exactly was behind her unique look (momma Kiya) and why she wanted her daughter to learn to embrace her natural hair.
It was truly an honor to meet Skai at her “Reach for the Skai” book release event. I purchased two copies, one for my younger sister and niece. I’m always so ecstatic to see a young brown girl like Skai winning and am so happy to support her. Now can we talk about the beautiful book cover shot by Jessie English?? Skai appears on the cover showcasing lustrous and kinky afro hair amidst a blue sky background. As a stern activist, mover and shaker on the natural hair scene, it truly warms my heart every time I see young girls and women embrace their natural afro hair texture!

‘Reach for the Skai’ is Miss Jackson’s empowering testimony of her humble beginnings as a youngster navigating the child modeling scene in New York City onward to her big break in Hollywood (being casted as Zuri in Jessie). All 204 pages of the book were more than a fabulous read! And the views too... It is chock filled with so many wonderful pictures of her, her mom, her former cast and others that she's met as an industry star. The book is an intimate look into the life of Skai—where she started, how she got her big break and everything in between!

I appreciated the diary/scrapbook style of the book because Skai’s authenticity and personality really shined through. Skai touched on various subjects in her book such as the struggles she faced as a child actress, appearance challenges, dealing with fame, being a target of bullying, and the lack of work available for brown girls in Hollywood. She also teaches us how to clapback. Let Alll the sassy girls unite. Cheers to the clapback! Wink Wink!

Throughout the book she also provides tidbits of advice on everything from social media, to beauty products that she can't live without, to ways of knowing you’re a sneakerhead! Yes...who knew that Skai Jackson was a sneakerhead!
Skai let the young reader into her world when she outlined her demanding daily schedule that she had while on the set of Jessie. This book is a useful resource for the youngster looking to break into show business because it provides insight and helpful tips about what is experienced and expected as a child star. I even learned a few things about set life such as ‘blocking’ and ‘cheating out’ to cameras.
Skai told us her blueprint to becoming a successful child star in Hollywood and how she used this opportunity to launch her into new opportunities including her philanthropic work with organizations like 'WE' and 'March for Our Lives.' I was so glad to know that she helped build a wall for a medical center in Kenya. It’s one thing to reach a level of success but what’s even more important is how you use your success to give back to others! Bravo Skai!
While reading the book, I also learned that Skai’s mother was a pivotal force in her daughter’s life as a young actress. She made some heavy sacrifices so that she could help her daughter not only realize her passion but work fluently in her passion. From not knowing where her next dollar would come from as a young struggling mother to being a mom of a successful Hollywood star--Skai’s mom has been there for her every step of the way, giving her encouragement and helping her embrace herself the way God created her. One of the most important takeaways from the book is Skai mentioning that her mother listened when she revealed her passion for acting. She listened and dropped everything to help her child pursue her dream of becoming an actress. I appreciate parents who allow their child to be whatever they desire to be. I also have a high amount of respect for parents who focus on honing and nurturing the passions and talents that their child displays from an early age. After all is said and done, it is our passions and talents that are our reasons for being and the inner tools that will propel us forward.
Skai, once again, congratulations on this moment and the release of your book. You make the community proud and I look forward to seeing you in your future films : ) The Skai’s truly the limit!
